Automotive Technology

Associates of Applied Science & Certificates

Automotive technology is rapidly growing in sophistication, and employers are increasingly looking for workers who have completed a formal training program in high school or in a postsecondary vocational school or community college. Acquiring National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is important for those seeking work in this career.

Automotive service technicians inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles and light trucks that run on gasoline, electricity, or alternative fuels, such as ethanol. They perform basic care maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, diagnose more complex problems, and plan and execute vehicle repairs.

Program Description

ASE National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation

OJC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Automotive Technology and certificates in all eight areas of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE): Automatic Transmissions and Transaxle, Brakes, Engine Performance, Engine Repair, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, Manual Drive Train and Axles, and Suspension and Training. National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence have certified all eight areas of the Otero Junior College’s Automotive Technology Program.

OJC's Automotive Service Technician AAS Receives National Certification.

The Automotive Service Technician program at OJC in La Junta has received certification by NATEF and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

To achieve this coveted recognition, OJC's automotive training program underwent rigorous evaluation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). Nationally accepted standards of excellence in areas such as instruction, facilities, and equipment were used.

"This is great news for automotive-minded young people and their parents," said Donald Seyfer, NATEF Chair. "Because this program increases cooperation between local education and industry leaders, it gives added assurance that OJC's graduates will be employable entry-level technicians. As a result of the quality education provided by OJC, the motoring public will benefit since better repair technicians will join the workforce." The National Institute for Automotive Service (ASE) is a national non-profit organization which tests and certifies repair technicians, in addition to certifying automotive training programs.
