Early Childhood Education

Early Childhood Education

Associates of Applied Science & Certificates

Child care workers and Preschool teachers nurture, teach, and care for children who have not yet entered kindergarten. They also supervise older children before and after school. These workers play an important role in children's development by caring for them when their parents are at work, are away for other reasons or when the parents place their children in care to help them socialize with children their age.

We believe that in order to succeed in school and later in life, children must be healthy, nourished, socially competent, and have a healthy self - esteem, as well as strong, supportive, caring families.

Program Description

Early Childhood Education

The Early Childhood Education Program is designed to prepare men and women to become teachers and/or directors of Child Care Centers. The two-year program leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Early Childhood Education.

Otero Junior College offers five Early Childhood Education Certificates that provide high quality, comprehensive early childhood education programs that strengthen the family:

  • Director Certificate
  • Group Leader Certificate
  • Infant/Toddler Certificate
  • Pre-School Certificate
  • Before and After School Care Certificate

Additional Course Information

In addition to attending to children's health, safety, and nutrition, child care workers organize activities and implement curricula that stimulate children's physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth. They help children explore individual interests, develop talents and independence, build self-esteem, learn how to get along with others, and prepare for more formal schooling.

Preschool teachers provide early childhood care and education through a variety of teaching strategies. They teach children, usually aged 3 to 5, both in groups and one-on-one. They do so by planning and implementing a curriculum that covers various areas of a child’s development, such as motor skills, social and emotional development, and language development. They use games, music, artwork, books, computers, and other tools to teach concepts and skills

Infant/toddler teachers play a vital role in the early development of children. They work closely with parents in providing a nurturing and quality environment for each infant or toddler. These teachers assist with the development of motor skills, language skills as well as social emotional skills. All these skills are developed through play and guidance
