1. How many nursing programs are there at Otero Junior College?
There are three:
- Nursing Assistant
- Practical Nursing (LPN) exit option after year one of RN program (AAS in Nursing)
- Associate Degree of Applied Science in Nursing (RN) Full-time and Part-time Program
2. How are the programs different?
- The Nursing Assistant program provides the required training, both theory and clinical practice, to become a CNA (Certified Nurses Aide). It takes one semester or less.
- The Practical Nursing Program provides the required training, both theory and clinical practice, to become an LPN (licensed Practical Nurse. It takes one year of nursing courses and approximately 1 year of pre-requisite courses.
- The Associate Degree of Applied Science in Nursing Program provides the required education, both theory and clinical practice, to become an RN (Registered Nurse). It takes 2 years of nursing courses and approximately 1 year of pre-requisite courses.
3. How do I apply for the Nurse Aide Program?
- Complete an application to Otero Junior College and register for the two required courses (NUA 101 & NUA 170)
- Have official transcripts sent to Otero Junior College from all other colleges attended.
- Make an appointment with Student Services Center to take the basic entrance exam if needed.
- Make an appointment with the Nursing Office to take a pre-entrance examination. If you taking the general education subjects first, it is suggested that you take the nursing examination after you complete some of these courses.
4. How do I apply for the RN Program?
- As of January 1, 2006 all applications will be completed on-line at the CCCS Nursing Admissions Website
- You must complete the pre-requisite general education courses with a GPA of 2.5 or higher prior to applying on line. They are Human Anatomy & Physiology I, English Composition, Human Growth and Development, Anatomy & Physiology II and Microbiology.
5. Can I apply for these programs anytime?
- Admission selections continue each year until the program slots are filled or classes begin. Selection is based upon the date of application and completion of all admission criteria (see the admissions website above).
6. When is the nursing pre-entrance exam given and how much does it cost?
- The NET test can be scheduled any time during open testing center hours in the Student Services Office. The cost is $30 due at the time of testing.
7. Does OJC give advanced credit for having a Practical Nursing education?
- Yes. According to the Colorado Nursing Articulation Model, if you have completed your Practical Nursing education in Colorado within the last 10 years it is equivalent to the first year of OJC’s ADN RN program. If you completed your Practical Nursing education in another state contact the nursing Office for specific advanced credit allowed by the Articulation Model.
