Soccer Head Coach
Head Coach Christopher Smith
Otero Junior College has named Chris Smith head coach as head coach of Rattler Men’s Soccer. Smith, assistant coach of the program since 2012, has contributed to the success of the team, which earned two region IX championship titles in 2013 and 2015.
Smith played soccer for Colorado State University-Pueblo as a goalie from 2007 through 2010. During this time he was voted RMAC defensive player of the week two times and named most valuable player once. While at CSU-P, Smith earned a bachelor’ degree in business management with emphasis in marketing and has since completed a master’s degree in sports management.
“I want to thank President Rizzuto and Coach Addington for giving me this opportunity. I am so blessed. I am excited to get started and to continue the success this program has had,” said Smith. “I congratulate Mike [Bielski] on his new position. I know he’s up for the challenge. I thank him for mentoring me and getting me prepared to take on this new challenge.”
The Rattler Men’s Soccer team plays its home opener on Sunday, August 28 at 5 p.m. versus Garden City Community College at Tiger Field. All home soccer events are open to the community free of charge.
Assistant Coach Cruz Cortes-Ortiz
From Las Vegas, NV, A standout soccer player during his time at OJC. Cortes earned an Associate of Science degree then transferred to UNLV. He is currently attending UNLV in pursuit of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Admin. Prior to his return to OJC, Cortes had been working for Clark County School District and coaching high school soccer.
“Having attended OJC as a student gave me a strong desire to come back and be a part of such a strong, community-based institution,” said Cortes. “I hope to encourage our student athletes to be the absolute best they can be both in the classroom and in their respective sports.”
