My Wish

Drank scent of something in the air
The blooming peach like in D.C. cherry
Here comes a Muslim joy– New Year
The start for feasting mon cheri
There is nothing better than a smell of old
The time when you’ve been told
About secrets, customs, and the pride
How cook the best and how to be the bride
“Navruz” is thinking person one
I’m wishing you the luck
“Maktub” is what a fortune done
My wish endures the love Allakh.

      —Komolova Mariya
Former OJC Exchange Student

Dawn

Lurking
Silent as night
Mysterious as cats
Darkness dissolves into the air
Soon gone.

      —Brandon Mosher
Cheraw Eighth-Grader
