Machu Picchu I
Machu Picchu: Quechuan for “Old Peak”
A town of granite cut from the Andes
Not visible from the Urubamba River below
Protected by Huayna Picchu, the “Young Peak”
Stairways up a steep green slope to the ridge,
Terraces for farming and grazing
Alpacas and llamas smile from the ferns and orchids,
Birds and butterflies flit among the rocks.
A condor carved in the bedrock takes flight.
Beautiful granite walls of the Inca
Stones fit together without mortar
Rock houses with peaked, thatched roofs,
Niches, windows, courtyards, alleys, aqueducts
And stairs everywhere, taking the foot and the eye up, always up.
At the top, a sundial tethered to that star
Ties the sun directly overhead at the equinox
And calls the sun back at the winter solstice.
