My West Yellowstone
“Bumpy ride, bumpy ride, down the cabin road, bumpy ride, bumpy ride, hoping to see a toad, bumpy ride, bumpy ride, all along the way, the sage brush is a singing and a hoping we will stay, yes the kids are all a dreaming of a waterskiing day.” This is a familiar family tune composed by my Dad. The uneven dirt road leading to our inviting cabin in West Yellowstone, Montana, inspired it. Creative enlightenment is but one of Yellowstone’s advantages. My sensational West Yellowstone surpasses other vacation locations in all aspects. Whether it is a sun–drenched day at the lake, huckleberry picking, cow tipping, or simply relaxing at the comfortable cabin playing a hilarious card game of scum, this country side heaven shares electrifying and original experiences with all.
Over the roar of our trusty red ski boat’s engine, Dad yells, “hold on tight, keep your arms straight, knees to your chest, don’t move a muscle, let the boat do all the work!” One of the first skills I developed was how to water-ski. It’s an entertaining endeavor trying to master the art of waterskiing. It seems inexplicably unjust knowing people on this earth have not experienced the satisfying sensation of slalom skiing. Exhilaration separates the mind and body from dry land, chilly morning breezes, and diversions of the world. Plunging into the freezing abyss prepares the mind for the joyful ordeal of being lifted out of the water to soar across the glass. Getting up on two skies seems mundane after experiencing slalom deep water starts, dock starts and beach starts. All through the summer my cousins and I look forward to magical waterskiing days. Our chosen paradise is Lake Hebgen. Curving around the mountains edge the surreal view of the glassy smooth water beckons. Disclosing the location of our water ski spot makes me feel like Benedict Arnold. It’s almost as if I am betraying a long kept family secret.
Like restless vacationing maniacs we would wake up at seven in the morning. Mostly to beat the wave running, tubing, and wake boarding obsessed fools to the lake, or win maximum use of the unearthly calm water. Early rising was also necessary to have the first ski of the day. This is extremely essential to all truly serious skiers (or stubborn older siblings.) Water skiing is a distinguished sport that requires the use of multiple muscles in the body. Soreness comes to your wrists and back and normally…
