Throughout the year, Club Cosmetology is involved in many activities designed to reinforce the principals and skills learned at the Academy. Many activities benifit the surrounding community, such as the free manicures at local events (left & below pictures) and the "Cuts for Cans" fall activity that the student organization does to help local charities and food banks.

"Community service is one of the areas of professional development we stress at the academy. We emphasize the need for them to get involved in their communities and to look for ways that they can be of service." said Tammy Dorenkamp, sponsor of Club Cosmetology.
"Cuts for Cans" drive
Club Cosmo, a student organization associated with the OJC Cosmetology Career Academy, has been sponsoring the "Cuts for Cans Food Drive" project to benefit area food banks for the past four years. In exchange for a minimum of three canned food items patrons can receive a free haircut at the academy’s salon.
The project begins in November each year; just before the holiday season. The canned food collected is given to Associated Charities and Migrant Head Start in La Junta, Salvation Army Food Banks in: Rocky Ford, Manzanola, Fowler, and Crowley County, and Helping Hands in Las Animas.
According to Tammy Dorenkamp, director of the academy, the "Cuts for Cans" project has been a great success in previous years, so students from this year's academy wanted to continue the tradition. The students realize that there are families in need within the area communities and this project allows them to use their skills and talents to help make a difference in someone's life," she said.
Club Cosmo sponsored their fourth annual Cuts for Cans Food Drive in November 2007. This program offers free haircuts in exchange for canned food items to benefit local food banks. With the program men, women, and children can all take advantage of the three days of free haircuts in exchange for three or more canned food items.
