Student Resources: Learning Commons
Bring Your Future Into Focus
The Learning Commons at Otero Junior College provides students with access to a large space providing an umbrella of learning support services, utilizing the very latest in educational technology. Funded by a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) grant, the Learning Commons learning and support services include a Math & Science Learning Center, STEM Tech Center, the Wheeler Library, and Student Success Center.
Some of the features of the Learning Commons include: access to databases, personnel to help with research and access to many assistive technology devices and computer options. A variety of seating options and study areas are available to meet each student’s learning styles. Much of the furniture is moveable, which allows students to reconfigure study areas to meet their needs.
Wheeler Library provides a variety of services including helpful staff, easy-access computers, laptops, tablets, reservable study rooms, and more! Come in if you have a question about the online resources and databases, want to use the video editing rooms, need a book or a DVD for class, or are just looking for a good place to study.
The STEM Tech Center puts the latest technology and resources into the hands of OJC students. An OJC student can check out Windows laptops, MacBooks, iPads, cameras, video equipment, and more.
It is clear that most jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math and science. According to the STEM Education Coalition, "STEM education plays in enabling the United States to remain the economic and technological leaders of the global marketplace of the 21st century."
Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded TRiO Program under the U.S. Department of Education. The program is focused toward students who have one or more of the following factors: first-generation, low-income or disabled.
