Ballet
Classical ballet training begins at age 6 and progresses according to age and skill level. A graded syllabus based on the Cecchetti method is used, with adaptations made as necessary to meet class and individual dancers’ needs. Levels 1 and 2 are 45 minutes in length, Level 3 is 60 minutes in length, and Levels 4 and above are 1 hour 15 minutes - 1 hour 30 minutes in length and are taken concurrently with Pre-Pointe’ or Pointe’ technique classes. Each class level introduces new skills, longer combinations, more complex exercises and increases flexibility and strength.
Vocabulary is emphasized in class as it is extremely important for the dancer to learn the correct term and definitions of dance skills as well as the correct execution of those skills.
Placement in classes is made according to age, taking into consideration prior dance training. Every effort is made to place the student in the class most appropriate for their skill level, keeping in mind social development within the student’s own age group, as this is just as important to the development of the total dancer.
Pre-Pointé
This class must be taken as a second class for dancers wishing to obtain their pointé shoes. Two classes per week are required at this point in ballet training to develop the specific strength and muscle development needed for the dancer to dance “en pointé.” Because of the extreme stress that is put on the joints of the ankle and feet, dancers must be at least 11 years old before being considered for pointe’ work. Therefore, most dancers will take Pre-Pointé for at least 2 years.
This class works to build strength in the feet and ankles in preparation for pointé work. Carriage and poise is also developed further, as well as knowledge of various dance types. Dedication on the part of the dancer to attend class, as well as the support of the dancer’s family, is very important toward the success of dancing en pointé. More information about the OJC Dance Studio Pointé Policy can be obtained in the dance office.
Pointé
This class is for dancers who have already obtained their pointé shoes. Dancers must be at least 11 years old to be considered for pointe’.
Once a dancer has obtained her pointé shoes, it must be understood that the dancer will use her pointé shoes only in class under the supervision of the instructor, and all exercises will be done at the barre only at the beginning. The first year of training on pointe’ is vital for all future dancing. Irreversible damage to the joints and ligaments of the foot can occur without proper training and supervision.
Dancing “en pointé” is the ultimate goal of so many young dancers. Our mission is to keep those dreams alive through hard work, and proper training during class. More information about the OJC Dance Studio Pointé Policty can be obtained in the dance office.
