Each March at Otero Junior College, the Girls in the Middle conference committee strives to provide opportunities for middle school girls to learn more about careers that require an educational background in math, science, or technology with the hope that this will encourage them to continue studying these subjects once they enter high school.
Otero Junior College and La Junta High School opened Immersive Education (iED) student clubs in January to advance the newly established Immersive Bent’s Old Fort project. Bent’s Old Fort, a unit of the United States National Park Service located on the Santa Fe Trail in Otero County, will be reconstructed virtually in the video game Minecraft and also as a fully immersive 3D virtual reality (VR) environment.
Marguerite Newby, TRiO specialist, has been active in coordinating blood drives for the Otero Junior College community since 2012. With National TRiO day falling on February 28, it was decided to use the blood drive as a way to give back to the community.
