International Students & the Community

International Speakers Bureau

This program helps coordinate and facilitate opportunities for international students to share their culture and language with American community groups, school children and area business persons in and around the LaJunta/Otero County area. Community groups wishing to host a program with the students should contact the Director of International Programs.

Friendly Family Program

Students experience more than “college life” in America

This program is designed to provide a cultural link between international students and American families in the LaJunta and surrounding community. This type of interaction can be fun and rewarding to all participants, student or family. For international students, it is a chance to experience more than “college life” in America. For families it is a chance to meet and get to know about a new culture. For both it is the opportunity to reach out and make new friends that can last a lifetime. This is a perfect program for families that are active and would like to get to know an international student, but who may not have the time or space to commit to having a student live with them. It is not a homestay program, but a visitation style program that does NOT include students living with participating families.

Home for the Holidays

During short breaks like fall break, Thanksgiving break, winter break and spring break, the dorms will close and the international students at OJC. This program is geared toward finding families that will share their holiday with an international student who needs a place to stay for the break.

Homestay Family

Homestay families open their home to an international student for academic semester or year. This gives the student a chance to participate in American family life to the fullest extent. Families will be required to provide at least 2 meals a day and will receive compensation from the student.
