Now’s the time to apply!

To: Southeast Colorado Rural Philanthropy Days Participatants
From: Jeff W. Pryor, Ed.D., Anschutz Family Foundation

Half-baked, half-hearted, half-_____ed - you get the picture! You don"t want to be one of those when it comes to identifying potential resources to fuel the work of your nonprofit or community organization. If you recently participated in the Southeast Colorado Rural Philanthropy Days, you had the opportunity to meet with representative grant makers from foundations and public sources. If you sat at the tables, presented your organization and received a "green" or "yellow" light from the grant maker, then by all means, submit a proposal by their next deadline!

Yes, grant writing can be challenging. However, you have three great advantages:

1. You believe in what you do and that passion linked to a good plan (strategy) offers a compelling reason for a grant maker to invest in your organization;

2. Once you write one grant, you can use it as a template for many grants (i.e. the Common Grant Application).

3. You’ve got a great resource at the Grant Resource Office in the SCORE Center at Otero Junior College -amazing people, terrific trainings, superb help!

There is an old proverb in fundraising: "You don’t get unless you ask." And now is the time to ask: develop and/or polish up that proposal, build a list of prospects, create the calendar and buy the stamps! I was in the office of one executive director who had a post-it calendar with each grant deadline boldly printed in colorful markers and created a timeline to give herself one month prior to the date to finalize each grant. She also had a small filing cabinet with all of the related materials. When the time came to submit the proposal, she had a basic check sheet from each grantmaker’s Web site and simply printed out the proposal with the right name and address, put in the dollar amount requested, opened up her filing cabinet and included the right attachments. And she was successful – her organization did receive support! And yes, it is possible that you may not get all of the funding you ask for, but hey, it is much, much better than playing the lottery!

You can get good at resource development! And don’t forget that the SCORE Center in La Junta can help you!

Best Wishes,
Jeff W. Pryor
