The Otero Junior College baseball program is based on four major components.
- Maturity: Our team players will be mature and ethical young adults. They agree to accept the responsibilities for their actions on and off the field and will conduct themselves properly in class. They will attend classes, turn assignments in on time, and be at study table when necessary. Team members are expected to be punctual to practice and in meeting other responsibilities. Maturity and responsibility are the hallmarks of success in any kind of endeavor: athletic, academic, or personal. Without accepting the challenges and meeting the requirements of a mature person, progress is not possible.
- Academics: Education is the key to the future. OJC offers team members a solid step toward the four-year college of their choice. Solid academics are the key. If you do well in school, good things will happen. Too many programs base everything on just winning. We want our student athletes to be good students and good athletes. True champions work just as hard in the classroom. I will expect you to always do your best in the classroom. Student-athletes are first and foremost.
- Positive Baseball Experience: As a collegiate athlete, the athletic and academic endeavors challenge participants to a higher level of experience. It takes a commitment to the team, dedication to team work ethic, enthusiasm for the game, and ability to take constructive criticism and grow positively. These are integral parts of our program. The ability to make adjustments often brings about more success. Furthermore, the team-player concept must be firmly fixed in the mind of each individual. Our goal is to achieve team unity, but not at the expense of individual imagination.
- Opportunity to Move On: OJC works very hard to fulfill the academic/athletic goals of all student-athletes. OJC tries to help every student to have an opportunity to earn their associate degree and transfer to a four-year college. We will try to help any student athlete move on and play baseball when they are finished with their career at Otero. The level that a student-athlete can play at when they are finished at OJC will be determined by his skill level. All our players are going to be asked to work very hard to become the best baseball player they can. This will help in moving on the highest level attainable.
Otero Junior College has a fine athletic and academic reputation with OJC athletes graduating at a rate of over 90% in the last four years. This makes an incredible combination for a young student-athlete. OJC offers a very supportive community and college that cares. You can add to the positive influence that OJC student-athletes bring to OJC and La Junta and share in the success each one gains.
