Five Certificate Options
Students may elect to earn 1, 2, or 3 certificates.
Each Certificate requires a one-year course of study.
Small Business Planning
Two courses are required to complete this certificate.
Small Business Planning I (SBM 121) ~ (9 Credits)~ One Semester
Provides business owners systematic instruction to give them the tools to make sound business decisions based on the fields of study in Small Business Management. This course guides the student in the collection of necessary information to implement a computerized record keeping system, and to prepare a business plan. Discussions will include computer terminology, balance sheet concepts, accounting principles, computerized account reports, legal structures of a business, the basics of contract law, basic human resource management and the business plan components.
Small Business Planning II (SBM 122) ~ (9 Credits)~ One Semester
9 Credits Each—These two courses are designed for new business owners who are just starting out. Credits for the two courses do count toward the Small Business Management Certificate. The program of study includes a number of subjects that will guide the student in the collection of necessary information to implement a computerized record keeping system, and to prepare a business plan. Discussions will include computer terminology, balance sheet concepts, accounting principles, computerized account reports, legal structures of a business, the basics of contract law, basic human resource management, and the business plan components.
Records & Computerization
Two courses are required to complete this certificate.
Records & Computerization I ~ SBM 131 ~ (9 Credits)~ One Semester
This course is designed to guide the student in the collection of necessary information to implement a computerized record keeping system. Discussion will include computer terminology, application software, balance sheet concepts, accounting principles, computerized accounting reports, and business planning components.
Records & Computerization II ~ SBM 132 ~ (9 Credits) ~ One Semester
During this course the small business owner/operator will implement a computerized record keeping system, by identifying the use of their current system, or installing a new system. Emphasis will be placed on the application and maintenance of an accurate set of computerized financial records, use of a filing system, and compiling a business plan.
Financial Analysis & Planning
Two courses are required to complete this certificate.
Financial Analysis & Planning I ~ SBM 141 ~ (9 Credits) ~ One Semester
Actual enterprise cost analysis will be calculated to facilitate the development of whole business projected cash flow statements. All facets of record keeping and updating of data will be emphasized, including refining and maintaining of a current accounting system. This course includes the review and revision of business planning goals and objectives.
Financial Analysis & Planning II ~ SBM 142 ~ (9 Credits) ~ One Semester
Business analysis through the development of accurate cost and market value accrual balance sheets for the beginning and ending period for the small business owner/operator. Emphasis will be on the measurement and analysis of changes between the two balance sheets. Analysis will include the preparation of an accrual income statement. Financial ratios will be generated to understand their importance to business analysis. Data generated from an established record keeping system will provided the basis for the development of these accrual financial statements.
Marketing & Risk Management
Two courses are required to complete this certificate.
Marketing & Risk Management I ~ SBM 151 ~ (9 Credits) ~ One Semester
Emphasizes the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the business and applying them in the development of plans for the business and applying them in the development of plans for the business. Includes the development of marketing goals and objectives. The development of budgets, including marketing, into the total operating budget and activities of the business. Provides a review of existing financial trends and activities for further analysis of the small business, measuring past and present performance, and developing risk management plans.
Marketing & Risk Management II ~ SBM 152 ~ (9 Credits) ~ One Semester
Continues from SBM 151 and provides more in-depth processes and planning to strengthen the operator’s business through evaluation and planning based on the strengths and weaknesses of the business. The business operator will develop appropriate business, marketing, and risk management goals and objectives and be ready to initiate their implementation.
Marketing & E-Commerce
Two courses are required to complete this certificate.
Marketing & E-Commerce I ~ SBM 153 - (9 Credits) ~ One Semester
Introduces the development of web pages using structured design to document layout. This course provides the student with hands on, practical application in creating and maintaining a web page for small business owners. May include such concepts as, web page layout, text manipulation hyperlinks, graphics, graphics formats, data tables and file downloading requirements, development of the basic marketing plan, defining your market, listing your page with search engines, and working with multimedia and the web site.
Marketing & E-Commerce II ~ SBM 154 - (9 Credits) ~ One Semester
Introduces the development of web pages using structured design to document layout. This course is a continued study in e-commerce and marketing for small business owners. It provides the student with hands on, practical application in creating and maintaining a web page for small business owners.
Gainful Employment: Small Business Management as a Career.
Christine Bullock moved to Colorado in 1997. She holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of New Mexico in economics with a minor in management. She worked as a management analyst for state government prior to moving to Colorado. She has also worked as a management consultant for various agencies within Colorado while managing a private law office. In addition to her degree, Ms. Bullock has completed several college-level courses in accounting.
Ms. Bullock is currently the instructor for the Small Business Management Program at OJC, where she assists students with developing their business plans, setting up computerized record keeping systems, completing financial analysis and planning, creating marketing plans, analyzing risk management, and developing e-commerce opportunities.
