OJC students receive Rising Star Awards

Two Otero Junior College students were presented with Rising Star awards by the Colorado Community College State Student Advisory Council at a luncheon on April 7 at Front Range Community College’s (FRCC) Westminster Campus.

The students are Chance Abert from Rye and Heather Estrada from Swink. Abert and Estrada were chosen for the award by OJC’s Associated Student Government leadership as students who exemplify the best in service and leadership.

Chance Abert is currently pursuing an Associate of Science degree at OJC with plans to transfer to a four-year institution to continue his studies after graduation. He made the institutional honor list this fall.

Abert participates in the President’s Leadership Program, Student Ambassadors and the Green Team. Abert applies himself fully to every activity from schoolwork, to participation in clubs, to community service work.  Those who know him always remark on his positivity, humor and kindness.

When he has free time, Abert enjoys camping and hiking.

Heather Estrada is pursuing an Associate of Science degree at OJC with a future goal of working in sports medicine.  Estrada was named to the president’s honor list this fall.  An industrious high schooler, Estrada entered OJC with many college credits already under her belt.

Estrada, a walk-on to the Lady Rattler Basketball team, contributed to a successful season. She has officiated for intramural basketball and helped out at many Ratter athletic events as well as with the Green Team. Estrada is described by peers as kind hearted, energetic and generous.
Outside of the college, Estrada enjoys working the family farm, working at Knapp’s Farm Market and watching Friday Night Lights on Netflix.

Fred Boettcher, faculty advisor for OJC’s Associated Student Government organization, said that both awardees have been outstanding assets to OJC.

“Chance and Heather represent OJC well as Rising Stars.  The enthusiasm with which their references spoke of their contributions and leadership justifies their nominations for this award. They both contribute positively to the community and provide excellent leadership on our campus,” said Boettcher.

Each of the honorees received a commemorative plaque at a special ceremony on April 12 in Denver.
