Lady Rattler Soccer splits weekend games

The Otero Junior College Lady Rattler Soccer team kicked off their weekend away against Western Nebraska in Scottsbluff, Neb. on Sept. 30. Starting with a quick goal by forward Mattie Alpert in the 7th minute of the first half, Otero quickly took control. Alpert got on the end of a deflected shot coming from OJC’s midfielder, Adriana Smith.

OJC maintained possession and put pressure on Western Nebraska’s backline. Just before the end of the first half outside defender Coleen Johnson won a 50/50 ball and played a direct ball into the feet of Alpert, who beat the defender to get her second goal of the game. OJC held onto the lead ending the first half 2-0.

Coming back into the second half, OJC quickly took over when Cassi Moosburger found outside midfielder Estephany Gonzalez, on a through ball. This allowed Gonzales to get behind the back line and put away a third goal into the back corner of the net in the 1st minute of the half. Otero kept the momentum going, connecting nine consecutive passes out of the back and up to Moosburger. She executed a give and go pass with Adriana Smith in the 77th minute of the second half, giving Moosburger the fourth goal of the match.

OJC’s final goal of the game came in the 75th minute, when a corner kick coming from freshmen Macy Sherick landed at the feet of Lady Rattler midfielder Georgia Findlay, who scored her first goal of the regular season and put OJC up 5-0, the final score.

On Saturday October 1, the Lady Rattlers competed against rivals from Laramie County Community College. In an evenly matched first half, the teams contended for the full forty-five minutes ending the first half tied 0-0.

The game remained scoreless for most of the second half, until the 75th minute when Laramie’s forward Jemma House managed to put away a one-on-one opportunity against OJC’s sophomore goalkeeper Caylie Hartman to give LCCC the 1-0 lead. Laramie followed up with another goal in the 81st minute by House assisted by sophomore Sara Ericson.

OJC worked to come back but was unable to score, ending the game in a heartbreaking loss to LCCC 2-0.
With a record of 7-2-2, the Lady Rattlers return home this week. On Wednesday, October 5, they will take on Trinidad State Junior College at 2 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
