Lady Rattler Soccer finishes regular season 12-2-2
Will host Region quarter finals Oct. 22 at 3 p.m.
 
The OJC Women’s Soccer team had a packed schedule last week, with three back to back games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Lady Rattlers started off the week with a big game in Cheyenne, when the faced the #1 ranked, Eastern Florida State College.

Eastern Florida State made a statement scoring the first goal of the game in the 8th minute with an assist from Sarah Chamale to Darien Davis. Despite the quick goal the Lady Rattlers worked to hold the score 1-0 through the rest of the 1st half.

In the 2nd half OJC came out with purpose, working together to maintain pressure in hopes of finding an opportunity to find the equalizer. Which came in the 80th minute of the game, when forward Mattie Alpert was able to run onto a ball sent over EFSC’s back line from Midfielder, Callie Larson and tuck it past the goalkeeper into the net. OJC immediately struck again off a ball from central defender, Kayleigh Brough, over the top to Cassi Moosburger, who was able to hit a one-touch shot, chipping the goalkeeper for the game winning goal, upsetting the #1 ranked team in the nation, 2 goals to 1.

In a quick turnaround game, the Lady Rattlers made their way back home to play against Sheridan College on Friday, October 14th at Tiger Stadium. OJC didn’t skip a beat taking 16 shots and 4 corners in the 1st half alone. In just the 3rd minute of the game, a beautiful ball flicked on with a header by Alpert was able to connect with forward, Moosburger to place near post. The Lady Rattlers didn’t stop there, scoring their second goal in the 22nd minute ending the 1st half with OJC ahead 2-0.

The Lady Rattlers took control once more in the 2nd half, scoring 4 more goals, two by Moosburger from Alpert, as well as a goal each from Coleen Johnson, Tyler Murphy, and Julianna Alvarado. OJC walked off the pitch with a 6-0 win against Sheridan College.

The Otero Women’s soccer team finished the busy week with their final game of the regular season, as well as the Sophomore Recognition Game, on Saturday, October 15th against Northwest College. In just the 2nd minute of the match, sophomore Ariyona Loera scored her first goal of the season with a first time shot over NWC’s goalkeeper, Katie Hoff. Four minutes later, forward Moosburger received the ball at the top of the box and was able to beat the goalkeeper with the far post shot, for the second goal of the game. Just before half, Moosburger was able to score her second goal of the game, putting the Lady Rattlers up 3-0 going into halftime.

Lady Rattler’s took ahold of the game once more in the 2nd half, when midfielder, Larson distributed a beautiful ball off of a corner kick for center back, Chloe Craig, to head into the back of the net. Despite being down Northwest was able to capitalize on their opportunity with a finish by Meghan Attenborough in the 52nd minute of the 2nd half.

OJC responded with a shot by center midfielder, MJ Crews, just outside the 18 yard box that found its way over the goalkeeper and into the net. OJC scored their 6th and final goal of the game in the 82nd minute from a pass played by freshman, Christina Grybos, to outside back Coleen Johnson who was able tuck it past the goalkeeper and into the net. Northwest College put up a good fight, scoring two more goals just before the end of the game. OJC completed the week with a 6-3 win against Northwest College.

This concludes regular season play, bringing OJC’s record to 12-2-2 throughout the regular season. Post season action will begin next Saturday, October 22, as the team hosts the quarterfinal game against Western Nebraska Community College at Tiger stadium at 3:00pm.
