OJC students named to PTK All-Colorado Academic Team

Two students at Otero Junior College have been named to the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Colorado Academic Team. Emma Brown and Samantha Mahoney were nominated for the All-Colorado Academic Team by the OJC local Chapter, based on their scholarship, leadership and community service.

On March 8, 37 top-performing and service-oriented students from across the state were inducted into the community college All-Colorado Academic Team. The annual induction, in its 19th year, is presented by the Foundation for Colorado Community Colleges and the Credit Union of Colorado. It took place during a luncheon/ceremony on March 8 in the History Colorado Center’s Colorado Room.

Emma Brown, Swink, is completing an Associate of Arts degree at OJC with an emphasis on history. After graduation, Brown plans to transfer to the University of Colorado - Boulder to complete a bachelor’s degree in European history. She also hopes to earn a master’s degree and a Ph.D.  Her dream is a career as a museum curator.

While at OJC, Brown has been an active member of Phi Theta Kappa and the Psychology club. Her academic achievement was recognized on the President’s Honor list in fall 2016. In her spare time, Brown enjoys traveling, painting and reading.

Samantha Mahoney, of La Junta, worked on the requirements for an Associate of Science degree at OJC before transferring to Colorado State University in January.  She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in fish, wildlife and conservation biology.  Mahoney’s ultimate career goal is to be a wildlife biologist working in research.

While at OJC, Mahoney was active in Phi Theta Kappa, Student Ambassadors, and TRiO. She assisted Dr. Joel Gray with a pesticide study through the Colorado Space Grant Consortium. Mahoney was recognized on the President’s Honor list in spring and fall of 2016.

Both Brown and Mahoney have also been nominated to the PTK All-USA Community College Academic Team.  All selections are based on nominations submitted by community college presidents.
