OJC graduates 39th Law Enforcement class

The Otero Junior College Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA) graduated its 39th class at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26 in the Student Center Banquet Room on the OJC campus.

Miner Blackford, Academy director, opened the ceremony followed by a welcome from OJC President Jim Rizzuto.  Anthony Avila, OJC–LETA graduate from Trinidad, served as the student speaker.

Avila’s message began with thanks to the family members and friends who helped to make this journey a success. He thanked the instructors who have full time jobs and teach in their off time; sometimes using their vacation days to teach.  In addition, he thanked fellow classmates for having the courage to step up to become law enforcement officers.

“The perception of the general public towards law enforcement is not very good at the moment. We all know that, but we as a class and individuals want to and will help change that outlook,” said Avila. “I encourage you all to let someone in law enforcement know you support them. I have talked to some officers and when they tell me a story of someone showing their appreciation their eyes light up. I think it reminds them of why they chose law enforcement, to help people.  Something as small as saying thank you for your service can make someone’s day.”

Graduates in the spring 2017 class include: Wade Adams, Guadalupe Arellano, Anthony Avila, Ethan Cantoria, Skylor Garrelts, Trenton Gomez, Bianca Hernandez and Brandon Reisch.

The LETA graduation ceremony is a special thank you for the families and friends who have given support, encouragement and strength to allow the students to reach this goal. Introductions, conversation and refreshments immediately followed the ceremony.
