Plata receives T. Shawn McGrath Memorial PTK Scholarship

Stephanie Plata of Albuquerque, N.M. received the 2017 T. Shawn McGrath Memorial PTK Scholarship sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa and the Otero Junior College Foundation.

Plata graduated from OJC on April 29 with an associate of science degree. Plata plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering at Oregon State University starting this fall.

During her time at OJC, Plata participated in Phi Theta Kappa, Student Ambassadors, the Gay-Straight Alliance, Art Club and Wunsch Hall Club. She served as a dorm resident advisor this academic year, tutored in the math center and volunteered to be a team leader for the Girls in the Middle Conference this spring.

“As both a first-generation American and first-generation college student, Stephanie embodies the values, ambition and hard work that the TRiO program fosters in its participants,” said Jeremy Yoder, TRiO Career and Financial Advisor, in his letter of recommendation for Plata.

This $1,000 award is a transfer scholarship supported by Phi Theta Kappa to honor former PTK sponsor and science instructor T. Shawn McGrath who passed away in 2013.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be graduating in the current year from Otero Junior College with an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science degree; be members in good standing of Phi Theta Kappa; and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
