OJC Rodeo starts the fall season strong
 

Otero Junior College Rodeo team had a strong start to the 2017-18 season at the Chadron State Rodeo in Chadron, Neb. this past weekend. Five out of six of the men’s team qualified for the championship round along with Kelsey Drinkall (Canada) in the goat tying.

Kody Aldrich (Westcliffe) was the high point cowboy of the team, winning the bull riding competition. He scored 85 points in the first round of competition and won the aggregate. Finishing the weekend with 120 points.

Also on the men's side, Dillion Micheel (Nebraska) finished sixth in the long round of competition in the bull riding and sixth in the aggregate. Mason Mardesich (California) qualified to the championship round in the saddle bronc riding with a 64 point ride in the long round and a 61 point ride in the championship round which gave him the number four spot in the aggregate and 70 points.

On the timed event side of the arena, freshman Mikey Kunzler (Utah) and Daxon Buttars (Utah) came back in the short round in the team roping. They finished the weekend in the top ten of the team roping competition.

Leading the women’s team was Kelsey Drinkall (Canada). Drinkall qualified to the championship round with a 7.9 second run in the long round of competition. Despite some bad luck in the championship round Drinkall had a top ten finish.

The team leaves the first college rodeo of the year with an event championship title and a great showing. They will travel this weekend to Sheridan, Wyo. for the Sheridan College Rodeo September 22-24. Then to Lamar on September 29- October 1.

Otero Rodeo will hold a jackpot team roping September 28. Enter at 6:00 pm and the roping will start 7:00 pm. For more information, contact Linsay Sumpter at 719-384-6876.
