New Scholarship for OJC Agriculture Students

The Otero Junior College Agriculture Program is excited to present a new scholarship for its Agriculture Students. OJC has partnered with the National Western Stock Show Scholarship Trust to offer two $3500 scholarships a year.

To qualify, students must be majoring in an Agriculture Science field, Rural Medicine, or Veterinary Science, be enrolled at OJC, maintain a 3.0 GPA and most importantly have shown at the National Western Stock Show during the annual January Show previous years. This great news was forwarded to students in the Ag Program and those who qualified took the time to fill out an application.

This year, the Otero Junior College Ag Program could not be more proud to announce that two of our students were awarded the scholarship: Lacey McCurry and Justin Hinkle. Each will receive $1,750 per semester. Lacey, from Pueblo, had shown at NWSS in 2017 at the Junior Market Goat Show. Her aspirations in life include graduating from OJC with her Associate of Science degree, then attending either Colorado State University-Fort Collins or West Texas A&M to complete her bachelor’s degree in Animals Science. From there she plans to work as an Animal Pharmaceutical Representative.

Justin Hinkle, from Fowler, participated in the Catch a Calf Program, Prospect Steer Show, and Low Line Association at the NWSS. Justin has mapped out his plans to graduate from OJC then transfer to Colorado State University to receive his bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness. From there he would like to operate a commercial cattle ranch and produce his own alfalfa ground and large and small bales of hay. His future also includes returning back to a rural area to settle down and becoming involved within the community such as being a local volunteer firefighter or assisting local high school wrestling and rodeo programs.

Congratulations to both individuals and their passion for agriculture. The National Western Scholarship Trust was formed in 1983 and has grown to award 100 scholarships annually. Every year proceeds from four major events are contributed to the Scholarship Trust. These events are the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale, the Citizen of the West dinner, the Auction of Junior Livestock Champions and the annual Boot ‘n Business luncheon.

Since OJC is now an accredited school for the NWSS Scholarship Fund, this opportunity will be available to future students at well enrolling in the Agriculture Program. The deadline is April 1 for future applicants. Do not let this opportunity pass you by and for more information please contact Brooke Matthew at 384-6964 or Brooke.Matthew@ojc.edu for any questions about enrolling at OJC or about the scholarship itself.
