OJC Rattler Women’s Basketball Season Preview

With only a few days before the Otero Junior College Women’s Basketball season gets underway, second year coach Taylor Shaffer couldn’t be more excited about the group of players he has this year.

During his first year as head coach last year, Shaffer and his team experienced a lot of growth, on their way to a third place finish in the Region IX’s South Division, and a third straight quarterfinal appearance in the region tournament.

“Last year’s team was an extremely tough group who did everything we asked of them, and that proved true as they made a run towards the end of the season. They also played a major role in building the type of culture we want our program to be about. That building year has helped this year’s team tremendously as they now have a solid base to launch from,” said Shaffer.

The Rattler’s return five sophomores from last year’s team, a group that brings much-needed experience and toughness to the young squad.

“The great part about our returners is the fact that they all played a major part in building the toughness that we want our program to be centered around, and they have done a great job showing our newcomers the expectations and standards that come with being a part of our program. On top of their experience, we also return four sophomores who played big roles down the stretch of last year’s late season turnaround, and are primed for a big second year” Shaffer added.

This year’s Rattlers have eight talented freshmen who will be joining last year’s returners. “We are extremely excited about this year’s freshman class, and we expect them to play a major role on this year’s team from the start. Our goal in recruiting last year was to not only find a group who will fit into the culture that we are building here at Otero, but to also bring in more size and talent; I believe this year’s recruiting class does exactly that. It is the most talented recruiting class that we have had in my three years at Otero, and if they can buy into our culture it’ll be exciting to see what this year’s team can do,” said Shaffer.

Shaffer said that it is too early to tell where this year’s team will be in the highly competitive Region IX, but he believes the team is committed to building the principles of the program and improving every day.

“We believe in a program that is centered around a team-first attitude, toughness, and doing things the right way both on and off of the court; if we stay true to these core principles, and continue to build our culture every day, I believe this could be a special year” said Shaffer.
