OJC Men’s Soccer Team Wins Fourth Region Championship

For the fourth time in the program’s short eight-year history, the 2017 Otero Junior College Men’s Soccer Team finished the season as the Region IX Champions. Established in 2010, the Rattlers have now accomplished this tough feat more times than any other team in Region IX.

To win the Region IX Championship, the Rattlers defeated Northeastern Junior College in the finals match on Oct. 29 in Denver. With the win, the Rattlers moved on to compete in the West District Tournament, held in Prescott, Arizona on Nov. 3.

At the West District Tournament, the Rattlers fell 2-1 in overtime to Pima Community College, leaving them one game short of a national tournament berth.

Although the team fell short of a national tournament berth, the Rattlers finish with a lot to be proud of. Several players were nominated for All-Region and All-Tournament teams by Head Coach Chris Smith and selected by the Region IX coaches.

Those players include:
Sophomore Kevin Chavez and Freshman Petar Pesic were both selected for the All-Tournament team.
Sophomore Gimale Essacu and Freshman Petar Pesic were selected for First-Team All-Region.
Sophomores Salvador Jimenez, Kevin Chavez, and Martin Soriano were selected for Second-Team All-Region.
Freshman Arturo Chairez was selected as All-Region Freshman of the Year.
