Women’s Soccer Finishes with a Winning Season

The Otero Junior College Women’s Soccer Team’s recently finished an outstanding season in dramatic form at the Region IX Championships. The Lady Rattlers met Gillette College on Oct. 21 for the Region IX Quarter Finals match. Otero came back from a 2-1 deficit against Gillette to score the tying goal with only a minute and a half left on the clock. The match went into double OT with the Rattlers securing the win.

The Lady Rattlers would then go on to play Sheridan College on Oct. 28 for the Region IX Semi Finals match. The Rattlers came out in spectacular form scoring in the first 5 minutes, only to be called offside on a debatable call and have their goal disallowed. The score would then continue to be 0-0 until Sheridan sealed the game in double OT for a final score of 1-0.

The Lady Rattlers finished their season under first year head coach Cruz Cortes-Ortiz with a record of 10-5-1. The Rattlers went undefeated in the South of Region IX, and held a 7-game winning streak, placing them as the first seed for play-offs.

According to Coach Cortes-Ortiz, he thought his team showed tremendous improvement throughout the season.

“We were able to land six girls to be considered for first and second region teams, as well as honorable mentions. It was an absolute pleasure to have been able to take over at such a late time in the year and still be welcomed by the girls. That smooth transition really made the season possible and I was able to implement the changes that I wanted to see happen in the girl’s style of play with ease,” said Cruz Cortes.

The Lady Rattlers will now begin to recruit for the upcoming season and maintain their focus on academics and graduation.
