OJC Inducts Eight Students into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
 

Otero Junior College’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society inducted eight honor students on Dec. 10. Chapter officers Andrew Burton, Christina Mackey, Adriana Smith, and Serena Rife conducted the induction ceremony. Other officers include Karleigh Bencomo, Don Brooks, and Mark Hady. New Inductees into the chapter include:

   Angelina Apodaca,
   Lexie Bitter,
   Michael Curtis,
   Shahana Devargas,
   Angela Leonard,
   Sara Reyher,
   Jared Smith,
   John Woodruff

To be eligible for membership, members are required to earn a 3.5, or higher grade point average last semester, have at least a 3.25 GPA overall, and have completed at least 12 credits at OJC.

Wayne Beadles, PTK faculty sponsor, welcomed the new members and their guests to the event. He discussed the accomplishments of the chapter this year in service to the college and the community. “We are working to create a fully immersive 3D environment that can be explored by people all over the world of Bent’s Old Fort,” Beadles stated. He went on to explain that this is PTK’s honors project.

The chapter named Andrew Burton, Outstanding Officer, and Michael Curtis, Outstanding Member for 2017. Their nominations will be submitted for possible regional and international awards.

Each community college nominates four students to the All-USA and All-Colorado Academic Teams. As members of the All-Colorado Team, they are honored at a luncheon in Denver by the State Legislature and at OJC's Commencement. If students are named to the All-USA Teams, they are awarded scholarships and are honored at a national convention.

OJC's 2017 nominees are, Serena Rife, Kayla Valdez, Angela Leonard, and Misti Collins-Redd. Rife and Valdez plan to earn bachelor’s degrees while Leonard and Collins-Redd, plan to join the workforce upon graduation.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society was founded in 1918 to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and to provide opportunities for individual growth through honors, leadership and service programs. PTK is the largest honor society in American higher education. It has more than 2.5 million members and 1,275 chapters in 50 United States, U.S. Territories, Canada, Germany, Peru, the British Virgin Islands, Palau, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and the United Arab Emirates.
