Register for OJC’s Elementary Education Program

With Otero Junior College’s spring semester set to begin on Jan. 15 now is the time to enroll in the Elementary Education Program. In 2016, OJC began a partnership with the University of Colorado Denver allowing students to earn a bachelor’s degree in elementary education after they have completed their associate degree at OJC. Students will then enroll with the University of Colorado Denver and take education courses, without leaving the OJC campus.

Upon successful completion of the program, a bachelor’s degree and Colorado teaching license will be awarded. Students enrolled in the program will be degree-seeking students and eligible for financial aid. According to Ellen Schreivogel, UC Denver residency coordinator, it is simple to start the process of becoming a licensed teacher in Colorado.

“First, begin completing classes to earn an Associate of Arts degree. Once students have decided they want to participate in the Elementary Education Program, they should talk with an OJC Academic Advisor about their interest in the program. Elementary education students will take 60 credits during the first two years and receive an associate’s degree from OJC. Students will receive instruction from a group of OJC instructors who will be working closely with both schools,” Schreivogel explained.

After students have begun working towards an associate degree they will apply for admission to University of Colorado Denver. The application fee to CU Denver will be waived. Students will continue their studies on site at OJC through a combination of CU Denver education courses (online and in-person), teaching internships, and student teaching experiences in Southern Colorado schools, for a total of 66 credits.

“For those interested in becoming an elementary education teaching professional, the partnership brings together a top public urban research university and a prestigious rural junior college to provide a four-year pathway to a teaching license,” Schreivogel said.

Upon completion, students will have earned a BA in Education and Human Development with elementary licensure from University of Colorado Denver. Registration is currently open for interested students. To register, or for more information, contact UC Denver residency coordinator Ellen Schreivogel, at (719) 384-6888 or ellen.schreivogel@ucdenver.edu. Students may also contact OJC Students Services Center at 719-384-6831 to register for classes.
