62nd Otero Arts Festival Announces Call for Entry Dates
 

The 62 annual Otero Arts Festival is set for April 3 - April 5, 2018. The arts festival will be hosted at Otero Junior College’s McDivitt Center Gym. The Otero Arts Festival showcases creative writing, sculptures, pottery, paintings, drawings and other works of art submitted by middle and high school students, throughout southeast Colorado.

“The Otero Arts Festival invites area students, grades 7-12, to share what inspires them to make their imagination come to life in either their creative writings, visual arts or through the theatrical competition,” said Debbie Phillips, coordinator of the event.

Phillips anticipates about 300 creative writing entries from 30 area schools, for the 62 annual event. “Each year we see entries from many exceptionally talented students. They are supported in their work by teachers, parents and community members who are involved in helping them develop their talents and exhibit their written and visual works,” Phillips stated.

Entries are currently being accepted for the Creative Writing division through Friday, March 2, 2018. All poems, short stories, essays and creative books that are entered will be displayed in the Reading Room, in OJC’s McDivitt Center Gym, during the public viewing dates, April 3 - April 5, 2018. First, second, and third place ribbons will be awarded in each of the three writing categories for grades 7-12. A ribbon and $50 award will be given for Best Representative Writing in middle school, and a ribbon and $50 award will be given for Best Representative Writing in high school.

High school seniors are encouraged to enter a poem, short story and essay in the Senior Portfolio creative writing competition. The winner of the Senior Portfolio creative writing division will be awarded a one-year, renewable, 12-credit hour scholarship to Otero Junior College.

Entries are currently being accepted by mail at Otero Arts Festival Creative Writing, 1802 Colorado Avenue, La Junta, CO 81050 or in person at Otero Junior College, Macdonald Hall Room 110, by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018. Entries for the visual art contest will be accepted on Friday March 30, 2018, from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. at OJC’s McDivitt Center Gym. Students may have one entry for each medium/technique with a maximum of six entries total per student. Entries must be labeled and hung according to the guidelines posted at: http://www.ojc.edu/OteroArtsFestival.aspx

Students wishing to reserve a space for the Visual Arts Senior Portfolio contest may do so by sending their Letter of Intent to Exhibit via email beginning March 1,2018, to Debbie.Phillips@ojc.edu. The OJC Art’s Festival has 32 spaces available on a first come basis. Entries are being accepted through Friday, March 16, 2018.

According to Phillips, the art professionals who serve as jurors for the arts festival will award over 600 ribbons in a contest that annually draws over 1500 entries from middle and high school artists of southeastern Colorado. The jurors will choose the recipients of Best of Show High School, Middle School, and Outstanding Senior Portfolio ribbons. Judging will occur on Saturday March 31, 2018.

The Otero Arts Festival theatrical competition this year will be a held Saturday, April 7, 2018, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Ed Stafford Theatre. For further information or to enter contact Cassidy Litle at 719-384-6851 or email Cassidy.Litle@ojc.edu, entries accepted through March 28.

One Best Actor Scholarship to the top senior thespian and ribbons will be awarded for middle and high school students in a variety of categories.

The Otero Arts Festival held at Otero Junior College is the longest running event for grades 7-12 that is sponsored by a college.
