Girls in the Middle Conference to be Held at Otero Junior College on Saturday Mar. 3

The 20th annual Girls in the Middle Conference will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Otero Junior College from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Registration is currently open for all middle school girls and adults who accompany them and will close on Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. The conference has a $5 participation fee. The fee includes breakfast, lunch, and a T-shirt. Adults may also register for the conference for $5, which includes breakfast and lunch. Registration for students and adults can be made online at www.girlsinthemiddle.com. All registrations must be made online

Nancy Mitchell, coordinator of the event, explains that the goal of the conference is to encourage middle school girls to continue studying math, science and technology once they enter high school. “Last year, 158 girls from 11 schools as well as homeschooled students in southeastern Colorado attended the conference to learn more about careers that require an educational background in math, science, or technology,” Mitchell said.

“The theme of the conference this year is " Reaching for the Stars," and will encourage middle school girls to traverse the wild world of math, science and technology. The theme will be carried out throughout the day in the workshops.” Mitchell stated.

According to Mitchell attendees of this year's conference can expect at least 18 different career workshops that will be taught by women who are working in those careers. A few of this year's confirmed workshops include: emergency medical services, engineering, aerospace engineering, GPS (GIS) mapping, medical laboratory technician, nursing, law enforcement, physician, pharmacy, veterinary science, zoologist, and the US Air Force Academy.

The keynote address is to be presented by Karolyn Evans, an aerospace engineer working with Sierra Nevada Corporation. Following Evan’s keynote address, the girls will attend two workshops in the morning, enjoy a lunch filled with activities, and then participate in afternoon sessions provided by the Air Force Academy.

Assisting with activities will be team leaders made up young women who are students in various organizations at OJC and cadets from US Air Force Academy. The Girls in the Middle committee is comprised of professional women from the surrounding communities and Otero Junior College.
