TRiO Blood Drive to be Hosted at OJC on Feb. 28

Otero Junior College’s TRiO Student Support Services will be hosting a blood drive with Bonfils on Feb. 28, 2018 in OJC’s Student Center Banquet Room. The event is being held in collaboration with National TRiO Day. The blood drive will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. TRIO Day has been proclaimed a National Day of Service with TRiO programs across the nation developing ways they can give back to their communities. TRiO Programs such as the one at OJC organize a community service project each year that gives back to the community. Last year TRiO members volunteered at the Recycling Center in La Junta.

Those who are interested in giving blood can make an appointment with Lynette Ramirez, TRiO tutor, at 719-384-6846. “To prepare for giving blood donors should have eaten a full meal within the last six hours and must be well hydrated. TRiO will have juice and snacks available after participants have given blood,” Ramirez explained.

According to Ramirez, the first blood drive hosted by TRiO was in 2012. The event started after hurricane Sandy as TRiO staff and students felt the need to do something to help other people in need. “This program is important to us because it is focusing attention on others and teaching young adults the value of giving to others,” said Ramirez. “It also helps people understand the value of a blood donation.”

Ramirez explained that by a Congressional resolution in 1986, National TRIO Day was established to focus the nation's attention on the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives. “We are very proud to be a part of this long-established day of service and giving to our community.” she said.

Ramirez encouraged others to give blood by telling them how good it feels knowing that what you are doing could save a life.
