Otero Junior College’s President’s Leadership Program Participating in Brackets For Good Fundraiser

Otero Junior College’s President’s Leadership Program (PLP) has been selected from more than 2128 charitable organizations across the country to compete in Brackets For Good 2018. Starting Friday, March 9, 2018, the PLP will rally supporters to advance in an online single-elimination bracket-style fundraising tournament. All money raised through this campaign will be directly reinvested into PLP scholarships. The PLP will need your help to advance through each round for a chance to with a grand prize of $10,000.

The President’s Leadership Program at Otero Junior College is designed to build the character and leadership skills of PLP scholars through a three-tiered process including experiential learning, service to the community and internship. Since the inception of the program in 2012, PLP scholars have completed over 12,000 hours of service to the community, college and local schools. Through the internship program over 2800 hours have been donated by PLP members to gain valuable on-the-job experience. PLP scholars also have the opportunity to participate in leadership conferences where they meet other students and leaders from across the nation. Membership into the President’s Leadership Program is selective and is based on merit.

Upon completion of two required courses, 120 hours of service, and 30 hours of internship, students may be awarded a Leadership Certificate through OJC. “I am extremely proud of the students who have completed this certificate. They are prepared to positively impact people and communities across the globe,” said Samme Ormiston, PLP director.

Adriana Coniker is a PLP graduate who feels like her PLP experience at OJC taught her that she can make a difference. “We are able to participate in various activities teaching us strategies of leadership and different techniques to overcome any obstacle at hand. PLP has helped me grow as an individual and helped me realize I can make a difference and accomplish so much in the community, my life, and the lives of others by applying what I learned through this experience at OJC,” said Coniker.

The PLP currently offers a maximum of 20 $1000 scholarships per year. To continue to attract future leaders into the program and in order to ensure that PLP scholars receive the scholarship funding, the OJC Foundation and, more importantly, the PLP students need your help. Many of the leadership scholars come from our local communities.

Jim Rizzuto, president of OJC, has been a strong supporter of the program since its inception in 2012. “I believe there is no better investment than investing in future leaders. We need to continue to develop and foster today’s leaders for a better tomorrow. I would encourage anyone who shares my philosophy to consider donating to the President’s Leadership Program Scholarship Fund so that we may continue to benefit our leadership scholars,” said Rizzuto.
