OJC Rattler Roundup Held on Apr. 13, 2018

On Friday, April 13 the Otero Junior College Rodeo Team held a showcase rodeo for students and community members. Due to poor weather conditions, the “Rattler Roundup”, which was supposed to include a barbecue, full rodeo performance, petting zoo, and cornhole tournament was drastically condensed.

Watching from the warmth of their cars, many rodeo fans gathered around to watch the Rattler Rodeo Team ride bulls and saddle bronc horses, tie goats, and run the barrel pattern.

“The night was not what we hoped it would be. We can’t control mother nature, but I didn’t have any time to reschedule, so instead we showed the grit of our team. Not one of them complained in the 50 mile an hour wind, and they put on a great show.” Linsay Rosser-Sumpter, head rodeo coach said.

At the beginning of the event, the team presented OJC President Jim Rizzuto with a custom, one-of-a-kind belt buckle in gratitude of all the hard work and dedication that he has contributed to the team over the years. The event also signified the debut of the new bucking chutes added to the Rattler Rodeo practice facility this year. Rosser-Sumpter thanked Rizzuto along with many others for making the new bucking chutes possible. The rodeo team plans to continue hosting the Rattler Roundup annually and growing the event each year.

The Rattler Rodeo Team heads to their tenth and final rodeo this weekend in Laramie, Wyo. where regional champions and this year’s collegiate finalists will be announced. Among those champions will be OJC’s own Mason Mardesich, a sophomore from Gridley, Calif.

“Mason has had a great year, and I couldn’t be more proud of him. This is his second year in a row bringing a regional title back to La Junta; he is a great asset to our team.” Rosser-Sumpter said.

The Collegiate National Finals Rodeo will be held June 8 – June 16 in Casper, Wyo. For more information about the OJC Rodeo Team, contact Rosser-Sumpter at Linsay.Sumpter@ojc.edu or at 719-384-6876.
