Cole Dewey Named Head Men’s Basketball Coach at OJC
 

Cole Dewey of Raleigh, N.C., was recently named Head Men’s Basketball Coach at OJC. Dewey played Division I basketball for four years at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. Dewey was the director of basketball operations / graduate assistant at Campbell University. Upon leaving Campbell University he was the assistant basketball coach at Garden City Community College, in Garden City, Kan. After his time at Garden City Community College, Dewey was the assistant basketball coach at South Plains College in Levelland Texas. He is currently serving as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cole Dewey to OJC as the head men’s basketball coach.” Gary Addington, OJC athletic director said. “He is going to be an asset to the program and brings a lot of useful coaching experiences with him. We look forward to watching him and his team this season.”

Dewey just completed his third season at Indian Hills. Dewey joined Indian Hills Community College prior to the 2015-16 season after he was an assistant coach during the 2014-15 season at South Plains College in Texas. The Texans finished the year 29-7 and won the WJCAC regular season title. They were Region 5 tournament champions and qualified for the NJCAA national tournament, where they lost in the title game in 2015.

At Garden City Community College, he helped lead the team to its best record in five years, a 22-9 mark, and a third-place finish in the Jayhawk Conference; their highest league finish in nine years. That squad also finished in the top two in the conference in nearly every defensive category, and was third in the country in defensive scoring average, with Dewey helping coach the defense.

“I am beyond thrilled to be chosen as the head men’s basketball coach at OJC.” Dewey said. This is an incredible opportunity and I am confident in my ability to take on this roll as head coach. I cannot wait to get to OJC and start working with the team.”

A North Carolina native, Dewey was coached by his father at South Johnston High School and was a three-time all-conference guard who earned academic all-conference honors in each of his four seasons of varsity basketball. Dewey earned his bachelors and masters degrees in business administration from Campbell University. He also has a minor in sport management from the North Carolina college.

At Indian Hills, Dewey had a very successful three years. In his first year there the team was 29-5, second year 29-5 again, and his third year the team went undefeated until the national tournament which put the team at 33-1 for the season.

Several of Dewey’s players have signed with schools in Colorado. To name a few: Shane Gatling has signed to play for the Colorado Buffaloes. Andre Spight played for Dewey at South Plains College and just finished his senior season at the University of Northern Colorado. Dewey coached Emmanuel Omogbo when he was at South Plains College. Omogbo went on to play at Colorado State University.
