NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Awards
 

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) honors both athletic and academic achievement in student athletes at the junior college level. Otero Junior College proudly recognizes 29 students who were individually honored for their academic achievements in the 2017-2018 year. A total of 52 student athletes at OJC earned Academic All-Region IX Awards. To achieve this award a student must have a GPA of 3.25 or above.

To qualify for NJCAA Academic All-American honors, student athletes must maintain a 3.6 or better cumulative grade point average and have been enrolled as a full-time student for three semesters.

Six OJC students met the qualifications for First Team (GPA of 4.0):

Women’s Soccer: Adriana Smith, Alamogordo N.M.
Women’s Basketball: Lerohl Berklee, Ogden Utah; McClain Walker, Colorado Springs, and Nellie Freeman, Eckert, Colo.
Men’s Soccer: Mark Hady, Colorado Springs, and Scott McGuane, Australia.

Eight OJC students met the qualifications for Second Team (GPA of 3.80-3.99):

Men’s Soccer: Aldo Palacios-Serna, Eagle, Colo.
Women’s Soccer: Deandra Pickering; Colorado Springs, and Meghann Root, Colorado Springs.
Women’s Basketball: Laura Prado Morales, Spain, and Molly Ostrowski, Lakewood.
Volleyball: Melissa Rodriguez, Costa Rica, and Stephanie Frantz, Rocky Ford.
Men’s Basketball: Miguel Lopez Jr., Virgin Islands.

A total of 15 student athletes earned Third Team Achievement honors (GPA of 3.6-3.79) were earned by three Rattler athletes:

Men’s Soccer: Alex Ayala, El Paso Texas; Gimale Essacu, Papua New Guinea; Kevin Chavez, El Paso Texas; Kohyo Yamada, Japan; Raziel Speer, El Paso Texas.
Volleyball: Anouk Van Noord, Netherlands, and Lexie Bitter, Fowler.
Softball: Delaney Fletcher, Lakewood, and Hannah Gates, Fort Collins.
Women’s Soccer: Estefany Gonzalez-Vargas, Las Vegas Nev.; Lasly Alaniz, Denver, and Mattie Alpert, Aurora.
Men’s Basketball: Jonathan Scott, Colorado Springs.
Men’s Golf: Travis Woolsey, Canon City.
Baseball: Ty Jordan, Roswell N.M.

Women’s Basketball: Danielle Freeman, Eckert Colo.; Berklee Lerohl, Ogden Utah; Alyssa Lovato, La Junta; Taylor Nittler, Kim; Grace O’Neill, Louisville Colo.; Molly Ostrowski, Lakewood; Laura Prado Morales, Barcelona; Alba Vera Ponte, Spain, and McClain Walker, Colorado Springs.
Women’s Soccer: Lasly Alaniz Frausto, Denver; Mattie Alpert, Aurora; Maddison Crews, Roy Utah; Estefany Gonzales, Las Vegas N.V.; Jessica Mourning, Colorado Springs; Diandra Pickering, Colorado Springs; Meghann Root, Colorado Springs; Adriana Smith, Alamogordo N.M., and Christina Grybos, Colorado Springs.
Baseball: Ty Jordan, Roswell N.M.; Bryer Rew, Silt Colo.; Morgan Robinson, Rifle Colo., and Zachary Thomas, Pueblo.
Men’s Golf: Joshua Stig, Australia, and Travis Woolsey, Cannon City.
Men’s Basketball: Miguel Lopez Jr., Virgin Islands; Jonathan Scott, Colorado Springs; Andre Arissol, England; Josh McNair, Thorton Colo, and Jervae Robinson, Aurora.
Men’s Soccer: Alexandro Ayala, El Paso Texas; Andrew Burton, Aurora; Bryson Chilies, Broomfield; Gimale Essacu, Papua New Guinea; Salvador Jimenez-Gastellu, Reno Colo.; Mark Hady, Colorado Springs; Soctt McGuane, Australia; Aldo Palacios-Serna, Eagle Colo.; Jalen Sanchez, Aurora; Raziel Speer, El Paso Texas; Kohyo Yamada, Japan; Joe Hussey, Denver; Ofentse Kwenaite, Pretoria; Kevin Chavez, El Paso, and Rafael Guerrero, Westminster.

In addition to these individual honors, several Rattler teams received honors with cumulative team grade point averages of 3.0 or higher. OJC’s women’s basketball team earned top ten with a 3.51 team GPA; men’s golf team earned a team GPA of 3.09; men’s soccer earned top 10 finish with a 3.20 team GPA; the volleyball team earned a team GPA of 3.03; and women’s soccer team earned a team GPA of 3.11.

Gary Addington, athletic director at OJC, credits the strong work ethic of the students and the collaboration between coaching staff and faculty. “Otero Junior College is committed to developing student athletes both on and off the playing field. These students exemplify the spirit of Otero. We are proud of what they have accomplished and expect to see them go on to great things.”
