OJC’s Men’s Soccer Team is Ready for Another Season
 

Otero Junior College’s men’s soccer team will once again be led by Head Coach Christopher Smith. The team’s overall record last year was 11-6-2 and they were the region IX champions earning their fourth region IX title since the program started in 2010.

The team will have a total of seven returning players and four returning starters. Some of the notable returning players include Aturo Chairez, and Petar Pesic. Arturo Chairez is from El Paso, Texas and is the team’s left wing. He was the Region IX Freshman Player of the Year last year. Chirez had four goals along with five assists. Petar Pesic is from Serbia and was the Region IX Goalkeeper of the Year last year.

Last year the Rattlers went to districts to play Pima Community College and lost 1-0 in overtime. The team was one game shy of nationals but was able to move one player to a NCAA Division I school, seven players to NCAA Division II schools, and two players to a NCAA Division III schools. For the second year in a row OJC’s men’s soccer team received the Academic Team Award Top I0 which meant the team had an average GPA of 3.2.

Coach Smith commented on his goals for his team this year which included continuing to be top 10 in the nation academically, win the Region IX Title back-to-back, and getting to nationals for the first time since 2010. He also wants to transfer every sophomore player to a four-year university.
