OJC’s Women’s Soccer Team is Ready for Another Season

Otero Junior College’s Women’s Soccer team welcomes new Head Coach Kevin Hurtado to lead the team this season. The teams overall record last year was 10-5-1 and they were 6-0 in Region IX South, earning them first place. There is a total of nine returning players and six returning starters. The team was composed of a strong group of sophomores led by leading goal scorer Chloe Craig. Hurtado stated that he is looking to build from the success of that season. The first home game for OJC’s women’s soccer team will be played Sept. 7 at the La Junta Tiger Stadium.

A few of the notable returning players include Jessica Mourning, Emma Donnelly, and Stormi Garcia. Jessica Mourning is a goalkeeper with 13 starts in 13 games, 78 saves, and the NJCAA third team Academic All-American. Emma Donnelly is a defender with 13 starts in 16 games, 1 assist, and one point as a defender. Stormi Garcia is a forward with 10 starts in 16 games, two goals, four assists, eight points, 17 shots during the season, and one game winning goal

This year’s team will be composed of 16 newcomers and nine returners. “We will strive to be a competitive team on both defensive and attacking sides of the ball. We will also strive to remain competitive not only in the soccer field but in the classroom as well,” Hurtado said. “This season we want to remain one of the top competitive programs in Region 9. Although we have a younger team than last season, we have a good core of starters coming back. We want to establish a structure and a culture, one in which all of our girls can develop as soccer players and flourish as future leaders. On the field we want to improve on being a team that creates scoring chances and have multiple girls that can score goals,” he stated.
