OJC Women’s Basketball is Excited for the Season

Otero Junior College’s Women’s Basketball team is ready to kick off another season with new Head Coach Sta’Nisha Hersey. Last year the team’s overall record was 10-18. They were 6-11 in Region IX. There is a total of four players returning and one starter. Coach Hersey’s most recent coaching experiences was at Dodge City Community College where she spent the last three years helping coach, recruit and train student athletes. Hersey has a proven track record and is known for mentoring young women both on and off the court. Hersey explained that she has a great group of players and they are improving and growing daily. “We are all excited to hit the court for our first game on Oct. 5, 2018, against Seward Community College in Liberal Kan.”

The team’s motto of year is toughness. “This moto will help us on the court and in practice throughout the entire season.” Hersey said. “We will be mentally tough on and off the floor. We will also bring energy, effort, and enthusiasm everywhere we go.”

Returning sophomores include: forward, Grace O’Neil, Boulder; forward, Lavra Prado-Morales, L’Hospitdet de Llogregat Barcelona; and point guard, McClain Walker, Colorado Springs.

OJC’s Women’s Basketball goals include: finishing the season with a team GPA of 3.35; wining Region IX south; hosting the first round of Region IX playoffs; having every player graduate with an associate degree; and making it to the NJCAA tournament. Hersey explained that she wants the team to be the best defensive team in Region IX.
