Otero’s Mac Martinez Moves On To National Wrestling Tournament

Written by Tim Kelley, social media & athletic information coordinator

Otero Junior College Wrestler, Mac Martinez placed third in the Rocky Mountain District Championship Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 22, in Powell, Wyo. With the third place finish under his belt, Martinez will now move on to compete at the national level. Martinez will be the eighth wrestler from OJC to become a national qualifier. 2017 saw OJC send seven wrestlers to the national tournament. The tournament will be held March 6-7 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Going into the duals, Martinez felt that Dalton Stutzman of Western Wyoming Community College, who was ranked 10th in the nation, was going to be his biggest challenge. In the final match ups Martinez beat out Stutzman for the third place finish. Devon Schoenbergor of Northeastern Junior College took first place and Dawson Barfuss of Northwest College took second place.

Martinez has been wrestling since the age of six and really hasn’t stopped since then. Martinez says, this is a huge victory for him and helps, “fuel the fire to go out and prove myself”. In preparation Martinez will be spending his time focusing on drills and conditioning, making sure that his cardio levels are tip top so that he, “doesn’t run out of fuel when [he’s] out there on the mat.”

Before wrestling for Otero, Martinez wrestled for Pueblo South High School all four years. Martinez enjoys wrestling at the collegiate level because of the riding times. He excels at riding and can use that to his advantage to gain extra points in match ups.
