Coronavirus Update March 12, 10:31 a.m.

OJC Extending Spring Break

March 12, 10:31 a.m.

Dear Otero Junior College Community of Learners:

To ensure the health and safety of campus communities across Colorado, the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) activated its emergency operations team focused on coordinating the system’s response with the CO Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the guidance provided by the Governor’s Office and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

While there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) on any CCCS campus, preparation continues to receive the highest level of attention from college leaders and system administration.

Immediate actions taking place across all thirteen colleges include limitations on large group gatherings, implementation of restrictive travel policies, and the possible extension of Spring Break for students.

Here at Otero Junior College we will follow the recommendations of CCCS and extend our Spring Break an additional week, Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27. Unless otherwise notified, students will not be expect back to campus until March 30.

OJC faculty will be expected to return to campus on Monday, March 23 to utilize the extra time transitioning appropriate courses from in-person to remote instruction and exams, and implement risk reduction plans tailored specifically for Otero Junior College.

We intend to keep all offices open and the college will continue to operate within the remote instruction model if the situation is deemed necessary by March 27.

The OJC Cabinet will be meeting this morning to work through more details of the implications of extending Spring Break an additional week and the remote instruction.

Since OJC is a student-focused, learning organization, I am confident that we will manage this disruption, while providing a rigorous and quality educational experience for our students. Adversity does not define our character, it reveals it and I know our community will be prepared.

I will be communicating with our campus community as more details are finalized. Lastly, we will be initiating a landing webpage with the latest information by the end of the day (March 12). I will send out another email directing you to that site as soon as the site goes live.

Best,
Tim
