Soccer Head Coach
Head Coach Christopher Smith
Otero Junior College has named Chris Smith head coach as head coach of Rattler Men’s Soccer. Smith, assistant coach of the program since 2012, has contributed to the success of the team, which earned two region IX championship titles in 2013 and 2015.
Smith played soccer for Colorado State University-Pueblo as a goalie from 2007 through 2010. During this time he was voted RMAC defensive player of the week two times and named most valuable player once. While at CSU-P, Smith earned a bachelor’ degree in business management with emphasis in marketing and has since completed a master’s degree in sports management.
“I want to thank President Rizzuto and Coach Addington for giving me this opportunity. I am so blessed. I am excited to get started and to continue the success this program has had,” said Smith. “I congratulate Mike [Bielski] on his new position. I know he’s up for the challenge. I thank him for mentoring me and getting me prepared to take on this new challenge.”
The Rattler Men’s Soccer team plays its home opener on Sunday, August 28 at 5 p.m. versus Garden City Community College at Tiger Field. All home soccer events are open to the community free of charge.
Assistant Coach Gabriel Carreno
Gabriel Carreno is the new Men’s Soccer assistant coach. Carreno joins the OJC team from El Paso, Texas. He is currently studying Kinesiology with a concentration in exercise at the University of Texas – El Paso.
A standout soccer player in the Premier Development League and the North American Soccer League, Carreno has coached for six years for club teams in Dallas and El Paso.
“I accepted this position for the challenge,” said Carreno. “I want to be a part of a successful and historic men’s soccer team. My goals are to win everything possible while making sure our athletes receive opportunities in both education and athletics.”
Carreno enjoys gathering with family and friends and all things related to soccer.
