The Learning Commons at Otero Junior College provides students with access to a large space providing an umbrella of learning support services, utilizing the very latest in educational technology. Funded in part by U.S. Department of Education, Title III, Part F STEM Funds, the Otero Junior College Learning Commons is home to Wheeler Library, the Venom Pit Coffee Shop, TRiO Student Support Services, and the Academic Success Center.
Some of the features of the Learning Commons include: access to databases, personnel to help with research and access to many assistive technology devices and computer options. A variety of seating options and study areas are available to meet each student’s learning styles. Much of the furniture is moveable, which allows students to reconfigure study areas to meet their needs.
General tech support is available Monday through Friday from 8: 00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in McBride Hall 140. Learning Commons tech support is available Monday through Thursdays 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. If the Technology Specialist is not available to assist you, please ask another member of the library staff for assistance. Our staff can help with network password resets and basic printing and tech issues, but we will refer you to the Computer Support Desk for advanced technical problems. Wheeler Library provides a variety of services including research assistance and technical support. The library offers a large collection of print resources including reference, non-fiction, and fiction books, as well as a wide-range of newspapers, magazines and professional journals and DVDs. Reference titles and several full-text databases are available digitally through the library’s website, which is accessible either in-house or remotely.
The Internet, including the OJC computer network, is available through a wireless connection so that students can use their own devices. Learning Commons staff can assist students with course reserves, interlibrary loan, holds, finding and checking-out resources, database login issues, and equipment.
Desktop computers are available for student use, laptops are available for on-campus use, iPads can be checked out for three days, and graphing calculators can be checked out for an entire semester. Students also have access to video cameras, video editing software, and study rooms.
Library instruction and research support are available to orient students to library services including searching the online catalog, accessing research databases, basic Internet searching techniques, and website evaluation.
The Venom Pit Coffee Shop offers Starbucks beverages, smoothies, bottled and canned beverages, freshly baked muffins and cookies, and a variety of salads and sandwiches.
The Academic Success Center (ASC) is adjacent to Wheeler Library in the OJC Learning Commons. The ASC is staffed by members of our Professional Academic Support Services (P.A.S.S.) Team and our Student Engagement and Educational Development (S.E.E.D.) Team.
Our P.A.S.S. Team members are professional subject matter experts who provide Supplemental Instruction (SI) Sessions for a variety of courses (e.g. BIO 111, BIO 201/202, MAT 050). They also assist students with coursework in one-on-one and small group settings, and offer Academic Success Workshops and study skills training as needed. Our P.A.S.S. Team members for the 2018-2019 school year are as follows:

Our S.E.E.D Team is comprised of OJC students who have completed at least one semester of college and have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or higher. These individuals help other students become more physically, emotionally, socially, intellectually, and culturally engaged by serving as Course Navigators and Student Ambassadors. In their role as a Course Navigator, our S.E.E.D. Team members have a strong skill set in one or more subject areas (e.g. writing, math, history, psychology), and they help our students become more effective learners through individual and small group study sessions referred to as Peer-Led Undergraduate Study (P.L.U.S.) Sessions. As Student Ambassadors, our S.E.E.D. team members assist with campus tours, serve as representatives on student panels, and perform other duties at campus and community events.

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded TRiO Program under the U.S. Department of Education. The program is focused toward students who have one or more of the following factors: first-generation, low-income or disabled.
