College Support Programs
Student success and retention is an important priority for Otero Junior College. The focus of services offered by OJC is to increase student retention and graduation rates and help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next.
Wheeler Library in the Learning Commons
Wheeler Library, located in the Learning Commons, is the heart of the Otero Junior College Campus. Library staff members are committed to helping students with their information and research needs necessary for successful completion of coursework and work closely with instructors and staff at the Academic Success Center, TRiO program, and other departments, to ensure that those needs are met.
The Wheeler Library offers a large collection of print resources including reference, non-fiction, and fiction books, as well as a wide-range of newspapers, magazines and professional journals and DVDs. Reference titles and several full-text databases are available digitally through the library’s website, which is accessible either in-house or remotely.
The Internet, including the OJC computer network, is also available through a wireless connection so that students can use their own devices. Library and Tech desk staff can assist students with course reserves, interlibrary loan, holds, finding and checking-out resources, database login issues, and equipment. Desktop computers are available for student use, laptops are available to use within the Learning Commons, and iPads can be checked out for three days.
The library participates in a statewide courier system, which provides for faster interlibrary loan service Library instruction is available to orient students to library services including setting up user accounts, searching the online catalog, basic Internet searching techniques, and website evaluation. In addition, an online resource, LibGuides, is also available for the above services, and also features specific course and subject guides to help students navigate through their courses. The Academic Success Center is adjacent to Wheeler Library in the Learning Commons. The Center is home to the Writing Center and TRiO Student Support Services. The Center provides students with additional areas to study independently and in group settings. The Center's Collaboration Room is home to daily Science PLUS Sessions, these are supplemental instruction sessions that provide hands-on group tutoring for specific courses with specific emphasis on science courses. Students have access to hands-on learning resources such as Anatomy and Physiology models, Apple TVs and other assistive learning devices.
Students who visit the Academic Success Center can make appointments with academic tutors or peer tutors for free one-on-one tutoring support throughout the day and into the evening hours. For further information call 719-384-6835.
The Academic Success Center is home to the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program, a federally-funded TRiO Program under the U.S. Department of Education. The goal of the program is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next. All services are provided free of charge to TRiO Student Support Services participants.
Services provided by TRiO include:
- Academic Advising
- Career Exploration
- Personal Counseling
- Community Referrals
- Financial aid assistance and resources
- Tutorial services – individual, group, or drop-in tutoring
- Workshops and cultural events – skills, budgeting, and museum tours, etc.
- Transfer assistance to four-year colleges and universities including tours, applications, financial aid and scholarship searches
- Textbook assistance program.

The Academic Success Center is home to the Science tutoring PLUS Sessions where students can receive free individual tutoring in science courses at OJC. Students can join in group tutoring sessions, called PLUS Sessions, that focus on STEM science courses. The sessions are interactive experiences that supplement the classroom lecture and labs. The sessions are held daily in the Student Success Center and students can attend free of charge and gain the additional support and understanding they need for success in their science courses. Writing Center - English, Reading and Writing Tutoring
The Academic Success Center is home to the Writing Center where students enrolled in all English and writing courses can access free tutorial services. The Writing Center is staffed by English faculty and peer tutors who work individually with students as well as in group sessions. Drop-in's are welcome as well as by appointment. The Math Center, located in McBride Hall, Room 129, is the place to go for help with math and math-related coursework! The Math Center is open Monday–Thursday, 7:30 a.m.– 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays until 7:30, and on Fridays until 3:00 p.m.
Several of the College’s full-time faculty are housed there along with full time and peer math tutors. Students can drop in or make appointments to work individually or in study groups as well as access MyMathLab materials for student homework and quizzes.
Services are free and provide that additional support and understanding students need to be successful in their math and science related courses.

The High School Equivalency (HSE) program is an alternate means of earning a certificate equivalent to a high school diploma. The HSE program is open to persons 17 years of age or older. For more information call 719-384-6848.
